Arguably Ghatak’s finest work, Meghe Dhaka Tara is a dark melodrama set in late fifties Calcutta about a refugee family. With its sparse script, audacious expressionist sountrack and a startling cinematic elegance, Meghe Dhaka Tara is undoubtedly a modern masterpiece – infinitely compassionate and humane. This docu-fiction film tells the story of an impoverished, religious father and his twin daughters. Winner of the International Critics Award at the Lucarno Festival and numerous prestigious awards.

 

12th     7.00pm                        ‘The Swamp’ by Lucrecia Martel (Argentina ,2001,1hr.42mins.)

Drawing inspiration from her own large family, Martel sets her feature debut in a hot and humid February mainly in rural northwest Argentina at a country estate, where indolence, self-absorption, sexual longing and easily overlooked youngsters intermingle to create a sense of foreboding that proves prophetic. Winner of numerous awards.

This bizarre black comedy tells the story of a dysfunctional family in Australia, and is filled with unsettling themes. Sweetie has won awards for best film, best direction, best screenplay and best acting.

Daisies is one of the most innovative Czech films ever made. Two dizzy young girls, bored and without any values, stumble through a bizarre series of wild adventures. Below the exaggeration, sarcasm and exuberance lurks a serious comment on a fraudulent style of life

An aging Anglo-Indian Violet Stoneham (Jennifer Kendall) lives a solitary life in Calcutta, teaching Shakespeare, her major obsession, to young schoolgirls. She invites Samaresh (Dhritiman Chatterjee) to write his novel in her apartment but instead he uses the place to be sexually intimate with his girlfriend Nandita (Debashree Roy). Violet grows emotionally close to the couple.  The lovers get married and no longer need the apartment, and in a poignant scene towards the end, Violet comes to reconcile herself with her loneliness.

DOD Exhibition

Marking International Women’s Day on March 8th, the exhibition of the month would feature the early work of India’s first woman photo-journalist, Homai Vyarawala who photographed extensively for over three decades till 1970. Her spreads from magazines like the Illustrated Weekly of India and the Bombay Chronicle date the late thirties and earl45vxcy forties. They document women as homemakers as well as their efforts to enter public life while others focus on relief activities during the Second World War offering valuable insights into the social history of the time. On view at Delhi O Delhi foyer through March.

Celebrate Phoolon ki Holi with flowers and fragrance while young twin sisters Kakoli and Savari perform traditional Kathak to a Hori taranna. Special Holi menu devised by Jasleen Dhamija, specialist of living, cultural, traditional and gourmet author.

As part of the Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia, our series ‘Words of Women’ introduces young writers from the sub-continent.

 

On the 31st, IHC-ISST (Institute of Social Studies Trust) Gender Policy Forum focuses on ‘Marital Violence and Women’s Property Status’.  The speakers are Dr. Bina Agarwal, Prof. of Economics, Institute of Economic Growth and Dr. Pradeep Panda, Sr. Consultant, NCAER.

 

Other issues on our schedule include a discussion on Electoral Reforms and the agenda for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections on the 2nd, a debate on the critical issue Development ‘jumps’ by addressing the parallel Economy” on the 16th, and Dr. Manoj Joshi, Strategic Affairs Editor, Times of India speaks on ‘Indo-Pakistan Relations: A Reality Check,” on the 23rd.

 

 

Among the cultural highlights are the National Festival of New Choreographies, 20th Dhrupad Samaroh, HCL Concerts and films.

 

March also welcomes the change in season and celebrates the festival of Holi with Hori geet, Phoolan Ki Holi and the traditional Charkola dance of Brij on the eve of Holi.
