KUMBHAM
Kumbham is the result of a long and arduous search in reclaiming culturally rooted aesthetic sense. Kumbham is also an alternative to the fund depended , NGO model of development.
'KUMBHAM' is an initiative, an outstanding instance of a Craft community rehabilitating itself through the very craft they had been alienated from.
This traditional potter community in a tiny village of Kerala's malappuram Dist were pushed into utter penury as an aftermath of modernity and the influx of cheap industrial substitutes.
The totally devastated community had nothing to look forward to, till activist Shri.K.B. Jinan an engineer by profession and a product of NID stopped at Aruvacode during his itinerary with a newspaper clipping.
They jointly explored avenues for a revival and sustainability of the dying pottery craft. A fleet of terracotta products were developed by the skilled hands suiting the needs of contemporary life styles.
'KUMBHAM' was thus born.
Exhibitions conducted in a couple of major cities had a mixed response. When the financial burden became unbearable, Mr.Jinan started exploring the potential of linking craft into architecture.
That was ten long years back, an initiative started with just three artisans provides shelter to 50 to 60 recapturing their dignity and creativity.
Some of the best houses, corporate offices, eco tourism projects, resort and hotels rely on KUMBHAM to give them a refreshingly new aesthetic look.
The range include 'custom murals, framed murals, designer tiles, household products, table accessories, landscaping products, astrological signs made of terracotta and so on....
The constant use of these exquisite products made from earth endows us with an emotional sensitivity and reflects in ever so many tender ways in our approach to life.
